You can buy numerous medications to strengthen your bones in pharmacies. Some of them contain single components and others are multi-component products. Which work better? What components should we be looking for?
Osteoporosis – prevention
Preventing osteoporosis consist mainly of increased physical activity and introducing the supplementation of components necessary for the proper functioning of the bones. Substances such as: glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and calcium are recommended in preventing osteoporosis. Why?
Glucosamine (joints)
It is a natural substance found in shellfish and shark cartilage. Glucosamine is an important substance for the human joint cartilage. Its effect is comprehensive. First of all, it prevents the further degeneration of cartilage while also stimulating its repair. Furthermore, it has painkilling and anti-inflammatory properties.
Chondroitin
A structural component of joint cartilage, responsible for amortisation and reducing friction between bones during movement. It can bind water, which additionally absorbs shocks during movement.
Collagen (joints)
It is the main protein found in the connective tissue. Thanks to its great stretching properties, it ensures the appropriate functioning of tendons and the elasticity of the skin. Depending on the part of the body, there are eight types of collagen. Collagen type I, II, IX, X and XI can be found in tendons, the connective tissue of bones and the joint cartilage. Its function is very broad, though it in mainly associated with improved function of the skin and joints.
Calcium
A structural component of bones. It is extremely important for their correct functioning. A reduced supply of calcium may result in faster development of osteoporosis.
Collagen in pills, capsules or for drinking? Maybe a combination: glucosamine and chondroitin? What preparations to choose?
It can be best to choose a combined product. Glucosamine combined with chondroitin has better preventive properties than any other medication on its own. Similarly, it is believed that taking collagen alone (regardless of its form) may not be sufficient. It is worth choosing more comprehensive products.
