Acute (purulent) tonsillitis, namely an acute inflammation of the tonsils, is a throat condition caused by bacteria from the streptococcus group. Acute tonsillitis usually affects young children – kindergarten, primary school children and teenagers – particularly during periods of reduced body immunity. Therefore, in order to protect yourself and your family from falling ill, it is worth to know how acute tonsillitis most often develops.
Acute tonsillitis is caused by streptococci – pathogenic bacteria which rapidly divide and settle in the mucous membrane of the throat, causing an acute inflammation. You may get infected with acute tonsillitis through the so-called droplet contact, namely by direct contact with the secretions of a sick person. Therefore, if you suspect that you or your relatives have acute tonsillitis, ensure proper hygiene at home – wash your hands with water and soap frequently, do not drink from the same cup, use separate cutlery, frequently wash the toys of a sick child. These simple daily routines will protect you and your family from becoming infected with tonsillitis.
