Laryngitis and pain of the larynx - causes and treatment
Małgorzata Kruk (MPharm)
Laryngitis is a viral condition of the respiratory tract, affecting both children and adults. In the initial stage, it usually manifests itself with hoarseness, increased body temperature, a dry, “barking” cough, weakness and moodiness.
Remember that if the infection intensifies and you have thick mucus from the respiratory tract or you feel shortness of breath, you need to visit a physician who will diagnose the causes of laryngitis and pain of the larynx and apply the appropriate treatment.
The most common causes of laryngitis and pain of the larynx include:
complications from a common cold which has not been fully treated,
viral attack,
voice exertion,
consuming cold food and beverages,
staying in rooms with dry air,
allergens,
air pollution,
excessive consumption of alcohol,
smoking (also so-called passive smoking),
pregnancy,
genetic conditions.
Treating laryngitis in adults usually consists of:
taking medications which thin the mucus,
taking painkillers,
taking homoeopathic medications for hoarseness,
taking medications for a sore throat,
performing inhalations,
humidifying the air,
consuming warm food and beverages,
avoiding large temperature fluctuations.
Remember that if the infection intensifies and you have thick mucus from the respiratory tract or you feel shortness of breath, you need to visit a physician who will diagnose the causes of laryngitis and pain of the larynx and apply the appropriate treatment.
