Lung cancer - causes and symptoms

Małgorzata Kruk (MPharm)

Lung cancer, also called cancer of the bronchi is an extremely common type of cancer and quite often results in death. Both women and men are at risk – usually middle aged or elderly.
The development of lung cancer is caused by many factors. What is interesting is that most of them can be effectively reduced in daily life, in order to protect our lungs from the carcinogens, i.e. the factors that can contribute to developing cancer.
The most frequent causes of lung cancer are:
smoking cigarettes (also passive smoking), long-term exposure to the toxic tar chemicals contained in cigarette smoke (remember that in cigarette smoke, there are about 3000 harmful substances),
air pollution,
genetic factors (heredity), lung cancer history in the family,
exposure to certain substances (asbestos, chromium, arsenic, radon, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and to ionizing radiation, usually at the workplace.

In the case of lung cancer, the symptoms occur quite late unfortunately and are rather uncharacteristic, often resembling those of a cold (coughing, hoarseness).
The most frequent symptoms of lung cancer observed in the advanced stage of the disease, are:
a persistent, chronic cough, sometimes even with hemoptysis (the coughing up of blood which is a typical symptom),
recurrent inflammations of the respiratory tract (including pneumonia),
a shortness of breath, difficulties in taking a deep breath,
hoarseness,
cardiac rhythm disorders.

Remember that in many cases lung cancer does not relent. Therefore it is important to reduce the risk of its development: quit smoking, raise objections to passive smoking. If you are exposed to carcinogens at work – follow the safety precautions in order to reduce the risk of developing cancer.
And if you suspect you have lung cancer – immediately consult a doctor. A specialist diagnosis (usually in the form of an x-ray of the chest, computer tomography, bronchoscopy, tests on the respiratory tract discharges and blood morphology) and the advances of medicine can help to diagnose the illness within a short period of time. The right diagnosis leads to the proper treatment (surgical or pharmacological), which gives the patient a chance to recover.
