Sinus treatment doesn’t always involve a course of antibiotics. When should a doctor prescribe antibiotics, and when should he not?
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are well known drugs that are not always correctly prescribed for the type of infection they can effectively treat. The therapeutic effect of antibiotics is observed only in cases of bacterial infection. Moreover, it is worth remembering that they have a so-called limited spectrum where they can be most effective, i.e. a certain range of bacteria they can fight.
Antibiotics for sinuses – when to apply?
A doctor can prescribe antibiotics when it is clear that your sinus inflammation is caused by a bacterial infection.
When not to apply antibiotics?
A doctor will not recommend beginning a course of antibiotics when it is a viral or fungal infection. In the case of viral infection, symptomatic treatment is recommended, i.e. taking medication that can reduce the symptoms of infection (anti-inflammatory medicines, preventing nasal congestion). In the case of fungal infection, it is necessary to take anti-fungal medication.
