Tonsillitis is an acute inflammation of the tonsils, most commonly caused by bacteria from the streptococcus group, significantly less frequently by viruses. When you are infected with tonsillitis, the physician will most likely prescribe an antibiotic to fight the cause of the disease.
However, in order to temporarily alleviate the unpleasant feeling, you may use medication which will help treat the tonsillitis:
painkillers and anti fever medications – for example paracetamol or ibuprofen will alleviate a severe sore throat and reduce fever.
lozenges for a sore throat - containing antibacterial substances (e.g. benzydamine, dichlorobenzyl alcohol, amylmetacresol, cetylpiridinium chloride) will locally disinfect the mucous membrane of the throat attacked by viruses. Benzydamine and lidocaine have an additional anaesthetic effect, fighting a severe sore throat related to tonsillitis.
preparations for gargling the throat - with painkilling and antibacterial benzydamine, which will locally alleviate the inflammatory condition of the tonsils and effectively prevent the infection from spreading. Sage brew and salt solution, which you may prepare on your own at home, will also have an antiseptic effect.
Remember to complete the course of treatment for tonsillitis as was ordered by the physician. Some patients stop using antibiotics immediately after they start feeling better, which is a serious mistake and can result in the bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics.
