When you catch an infection of the upper respiratory tract, you feel unwell and typical symptoms such as rhinitis, sore throat, hoarseness or fever do not allow you to function normally. Learn how to differentiate between the common cold and influenza before you use medications. Although treating both infections is similar and consists, above all, of fighting uncomfortable complaints (the so-called treatment of symptoms), the important difference applies to the risk of complications which may be really serious in the case of influenza.
In the case of the common cold, the beginning of symptoms is slow and the infection is usually associated with the weather (cooling, chill or dampness). Typical complaints increase gradually – a fever is rather rare and usually reaches no more than 38°C. Persistent rhinitis and sneezing, conjunctivitis, hoarseness and a sore throat are often the first symptoms of the common cold. On the other hand, joint and muscle pain appear extremely rarely in the common cold.
As opposed to the common cold, influenza produces clear, sudden symptoms, not related to the weather. There is a high temperature (often in excess of 38°C), muscle pain, strong headache, malaise, weakness and a dry cough. Sneezing, rhinitis, hoarseness all occur much less frequently in the course of influenza than in the course of the common cold. When influenza is not treated or treated improperly, it can lead to serious complications.
Therefore, it is essential to be able to differentiate between the common cold and influenza, and, if your condition deteriorates, quickly visit a physician to start effective treatment and avoid complications. These could threaten not only your health but also your life.
