Rhinitis, namely the common cold, is a frequent symptom of an infection of the upper respiratory tract. It is caused by an inflammatory condition of the nasal mucous membrane attacked by viruses. As a result of the infection, the nasal mucous membrane swells, reducing the permeability of fine blood vessels. In consequence, this leads to the formation of exudation. Swelling of the nasal mucous membrane and the thickening secretion limit the flow of air and make it difficult to breathe.
Usually, at the beginning of a viral infection, rhinitis is watery and it thickens after a few days. If there is no bacterial infection – thick rhinitis is a sign that the common cold is easing off.
